ActiveCastanea sativa Mill. · Sweet chestnut
PEDRO URQUIJO LANDALUCE
10 August 2026
The variety is autochthonous to the area of the Roccamonfina volcano in the province of Caserta. It is not a product of modern breeding, but rather a part of the regional genetic heritage used in local chestnut cultivation.
In the scientific community, the variety is actively studied using genetic characterization methods with DNA markers, which allows it to be differentiated from other local varieties in the region, such as Lucente, Mercogliana, and Napoletana. Research is also aimed at analyzing the resistance of this genotype to pests, in particular to the chestnut gall wasp.
