The variety is the result of breeding work to preserve local genetic heritage in the Catalonia region. Its name is due to the ripening period of the fruits, the harvest of which is traditionally timed to coincide with St. Martin's Day.

The fruits of this variety, along with the Miquelenca variety, form the basis of the traditional chestnut harvest in the Montseny area, known collectively as Castanya de Viladrau. The variety is adapted to local environmental conditions and is used in traditional plantings with wide tree spacing intervals from 10x10 to 15x15 meters.
