Pistolese fruits are characterized as very small. The variety belongs to a group of chestnuts whose fruits can be polyembryonic and have a tightly adhering pellicle that penetrates the cotyledons, which distinguishes them from varieties of the Marrone group.

The variety is traditional for the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine region. Castanea sativa is a cross-pollinating plant, so the presence of pollinator varieties is required to obtain a stable yield.
