The variety was formed as a result of centuries of folk selection in the province of Lucca. PONTECOSI fruits are distinguished by a specific chemical composition and, according to studies, have the highest fructose content among local varieties of this region.
The plant is traditionally used for the production of chestnut flour with the protected geographical indication Farina di Neccio della Garfagnana. Harvesting in the growing area usually takes place in October and November.
