The Portaloune variety, also known by the synonym Hâtive de Cadouin, is a tree with high vigor. Harvest of the fruits, which are round in shape and devoid of internal septa, occurs from mid to late September.

The fruits are characterized by ease of peeling, however, the variety is characterized by a limited shelf life of 2–3 weeks. The tree is sensitive to diseases such as ink disease and chestnut blight.

In horticulture, the variety is valued as a valuable pollinator for other chestnut varieties due to the abundant production of fertile pollen. To ensure fruiting, the variety, like other chestnut species, requires the presence of pollinator varieties for cross-pollination.
