Variety description

10 August 2026

The ROSSOLE variety, also known by the names Rossola, Rossolo, Rossella, and Rossolino, is an autochthonous Italian variety traditionally grown in the Tuscany regions, specifically in the province of Lucca and Garfagnana. The variety name originates from the Italian word for "red," which reflects the characteristic appearance of the fruits: they have a rounded shape and reddish skin with indistinct stripes.

The fruits are distinguished by good taste qualities and are easily peeled, which is why they are traditionally used for making chestnut flour. The variety shows resistance to Dryocosmus kuriphilus, which is associated with the increased density and rigidity of the foliage, making it difficult for the pest to lay eggs. Given that ROSSOLE belongs to folk selection adapted to specific mountain conditions, data on its industrial potential and growth parameters are unavailable.
