Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is a landrace and not a result of modern breeding. The name comes from the characteristic reddish hue of the fruit peel with barely noticeable stripes. The fruits of the variety are traditionally consumed fresh and are also used for the production of chestnut flour.

The trees possess resistance to attacks by the chestnut gall wasp, which is explained by the structural features of the leaves that hinder egg-laying by the pest. The variety constitutes a significant part of local forest plantations in the Apennine Mountains.
