The variety is an evergreen tree, the fruits of which are used in the food industry for the production of carob and gum, as well as for livestock feed. In scientific literature, the variety is characterized as early-flowering, with fruit set levels ranging from 12 to 38% of the total number of flowers.

This variety is native to the Balearic Islands and has been included in genetic resource catalogs for the conservation of local biodiversity. The name is descriptive, so it may be applied to different local forms of the plant in various regions of the Mediterranean.
