The variety belongs to the species Citrus deliciosa and is a non-hybrid plant. The fruits are medium-sized, often have a slightly flattened shape and a characteristic small indentation at the point of peduncle attachment. The thick peel is easily separated from the flesh, especially when the fruit reaches full maturity, at which point it becomes slightly puffy.

The fruit flesh is juicy and sweet with a slight acidity; the segments separate easily. Due to its origin, the variety contains seeds. Thanks to its high flavor and aromatic properties, the fruits are consumed fresh and are also used for making candied fruit, jams, and liqueurs.

The plant is a traditional ecotype cultivated primarily in Sicily. The variety requires manual harvesting and is not a hybrid, which distinguishes it from clementines.
