The variety is a diploid hybrid obtained by crossing Oroval clementine and Moro orange. The fruits are characterized by a low weight, averaging about 45 g, and a variable seed count. The taste is characterized by the absence of specific off-flavors inherent in many highly pigmented citrus varieties.
The main morphological feature of the variety is a level of anthocyanin pigmentation unique to citrus, manifesting in both the peel and the pulp of the fruit. Breeding work on the variety included consideration of resistance to the fungal disease brown spot, caused by Alternaria alternata.
