The plant is an evergreen tree or large shrub, reaching 2–4.5 meters in height under cultivation. Young branches have an angular shape and straight, strong thorns 1.5–2 cm long. A characteristic feature is the wide, long winged petioles of the leaves, the area of which can be comparable to that of the leaf blade.
The species is distinguished by its high winter hardiness, withstanding temperature drops down to -15…-17 °C. Large white or pinkish flowers have ornamental value. The fruits contain little juice, many seeds, and have an acrid taste; therefore, they are not used fresh, but are mainly used for flavoring and in traditional medicine.
