The Puvis amélioré variety, also known by the synonym Plein blanc amélioré Puvis, belongs to the Cardoon Group. The plant is grown as a vegetable crop for its fleshy leaf stalks, which become edible after preliminary shading.
This variety is a perennial plant, however, in agricultural practice, it is more often cultivated in an annual or biennial cycle. The plants are sensitive to weather conditions: their growth stops at night temperatures above 23–25 °C, and prolonged frosts below -10 °C can lead to the death of the crop.
