The variety belongs to the turf type and is used for establishing sites for various purposes. In breeding work, Shelby was used as a maternal line in the creation of new experimental samples using the polycross method.
The plant was evaluated within the framework of comparative trials for drought tolerance and the ability to recover after environmental stress. Scientific publications also mention the variety in the context of research on endophytic fungi of the genus Epichloë/Neotyphodium, which develop in the tissues of the fescue.
