Dauphine Rouge is considered a variant or clone of the Dauphine group of varieties. The fruits have skin color ranging from red to purple and pink or amber flesh. The plant is noted for its strong growth and large lobed leaves, and the fruits are primarily consumed fresh or used for processing.

The type of fruiting remains a subject of discussion. Many classify the variety as a San Pedro type, which produces an abundant crop of early fruits on last year's wood, but often requires pollination for the main crop on current-season shoots.
