The name «Moscatel» does not refer to a specific breeding variety, but denotes a group of local fig varieties. There is a «Moscatel Branco» variety, also known as «Pingo de Mel», which is characterized by a honey taste and the ability to produce two harvests per year.

Within the group, there are significant differences in agronomic properties. Depending on the region, this name can refer to both unifera type varieties, which produce one harvest per season, and bifera type varieties, which produce two harvests.
