The FA 517 rootstock is characterized by low vigor, which allows it to be used for creating high-density orange and mandarin plantings. Plants grafted onto this rootstock are significantly smaller in size compared to trees on standard vigorous rootstocks.

The variety possesses resistance or tolerance to the citrus tristeza virus and the root system fungal disease Dematophora necatrix. Good tolerance to soil salinity is also noted. The use of this rootstock affects fruit characteristics, including size, weight, rind thickness, and the composition of volatile compounds in the juice.
