Multi-stemmed upright shrub 1.5–2.5 meters high and up to 3 meters wide. Leaves are large, deeply lobed, dark green in summer and turning reddish-purple or bronze shades in autumn. Bark is cinnamon-brown, exfoliating, retaining its decorative appearance in winter.

Inflorescences are pyramidal panicles about 20 cm long, consisting of sterile and fertile flowers, which may turn pink over time. Flowering occurs on the previous year's shoots from late spring to mid-summer. The variety tolerates hardiness zones 5–9 and prefers partial shade.
