The plant has an upright form and a coarse textural structure. Large lobed leaves are grayish-green in spring, changing to dark green by summer, and acquiring brick-red shades in autumn. An additional decorative element is the brick-colored exfoliating bark, visible in winter.
Cone-shaped inflorescences reach 20–30 cm in length and consist of a mixture of sterile and fertile fragrant flowers. Upon opening, they are white, which over time changes to pinkish. Flowering begins in late spring and continues until mid-summer.
The shrub is characterized by slow growth and hardiness zone 5a. The plant prefers medium or moist soils, does not tolerate drying out, but is not demanding regarding pH level. The variety «Wade Mahlke» is a synonym for the variety «Emerald Lake».
