The variety belongs to the annual form of ryegrass and exists in diploid and tetraploid versions. The plant is of the spring development type, loosely tufted, with glabrous leaves. Tetraploid forms are distinguished by larger seeds, as well as wider and more succulent leaves compared to diploid ones.

Tetila is valued for its rapid growth in the cool season and early spring development, which makes it sought after for hay, silage, and green fodder production. The crop requires fertile soils and sufficient moisture supply. In international practice, the variety name is often used as a standard designation for a group of annual Westerwolths ryegrasses.
