The variety is a color mutation (sport) of the Gravensteiner variety. The tree is characterized by vigorous growth and forms a large spreading crown. The variety is triploid and flowers very early, which poses a risk of damage from spring frosts; it is a poor pollinator and requires other pollinator varieties nearby.
Fruits are medium to large in size, having a greenish-yellow ground color with a bright red blush or stripes. The flesh is light yellow, juicy, soft, and aromatic. The variety has a summer maturity period; fruits ripen gradually starting in August and have a short storage life.
The plant is prone to biennial bearing and infection with apple scab and powdery mildew; susceptibility to codling moth is also noted. Fruits are prone to dropping in strong winds. Cultivation requires fertile, moderately moist soils and sites protected from the wind.
