The tree is vigorous, has a spreading crown, and bears fruit on spurs. The fruits are large or very large, often barrel-shaped. The skin is rough, often russeted, colored greenish-gray or yellow with an orange-red blush. The flesh is firm, crisp, coarse-grained, and juicy, with a sour taste and spicy aroma.

The variety is triploid, self-infertile, and requires pollinators. It is prone to biennial bearing and enters the bearing stage relatively late. It possesses resistance to scab and canker, but is sensitive to core rot. Harvest maturity occurs in October; fruits can be stored until March–April. There are clones, for example 'Red Boskoop' with a redder fruit color.
