The variety was bred under the American COOP breeding program using the ornamental apple Malus floribunda 821 as a carrier of the Vf scab resistance gene. It became the first officially recognized result of this program.

The main characteristic of the variety is genetic immunity to scab. In breeding work, the variety is used as a parent form to produce new resistant varieties. In scientific publications, Coop 2 also appears as a reference sample when conducting molecular genetic research.

In terms of organoleptic properties and fruit keeping quality, the variety is inferior to a number of leading world apple varieties. The purpose of the variety is cultivation in conditions requiring a reduction in the use of chemical plant protection products.
