The variety was bred within the PRI breeding program by crossing forms 855-102 and New Jersey 31. The tree has high vigor, forms a moderately spreading crown, and is distinguished by annual high yield, which requires fruit thinning in favorable years.

The fruits are intended for fresh consumption. They are capable of maintaining texture and taste when stored under normal conditions for up to 10 weeks at a temperature of 0.5–1.0°C. The variety is not susceptible to flesh browning, which is characteristic of some other types.

The variety possesses immunity to apple scab. Low susceptibility to powdery mildew and low susceptibility to fire blight are noted in comparison with the Jonathan variety.
