The variety is a triploid hybrid obtained from a cross between the Prinzenapfel variety and an unknown pollinator. In literature, it is found under a number of synonyms, such as Doppelter Prinzenapfel, Brienzer, Freiämter Rotapfel, Schmutzacker, and Belle de Ballaigues.

The fruits are large and reach harvest maturity in mid-September. The storage life of the fruits is estimated as short, although it may vary depending on the age of the tree. The variety is characterized as dual-purpose, suitable for eating, baking, decorative purposes, juice production, and cider making.

The trees are capable of producing good yields even at small sizes. The variety is included in lists of rare old species of interest for the preservation of biodiversity in Germany and Switzerland.
