The Echter Prinz variety is known under a number of synonyms, including "Prinzenapfel", "Ananasapfel", "Berliner", "Haferapfel", "Hasenkopf", "Melonenapfel", "Schafsnase" and "Schlotterapfel". The first description of the variety was made in 1760 by Knoop under the name "Rother Schlotterapfel".
