The name Eckapfel in German pomology is a historical synonym for a number of ancient apples, primarily the variety «Weißer Winterkalvill». It is also applied to local varieties that have strongly protruding ribs extending from the calyx to the pedicel.

Fruits of the described type are large or very large, flat-round in shape, with a greenish-yellow skin that acquires a golden hue upon ripening. The flesh is juicy, with a fine texture, and possesses a pronounced aroma. The variety belongs to the late-winter group and is valued as a high-quality dessert product.

In regions of Germany, different forms could be described under this name, which creates confusion with identification. There is also an independent variety «Extertaler Eckapfel», which should be distinguished from the historical group of common names.
