The variety is of Russian origin and was known before 1800, later becoming widely distributed abroad under the names Grand Alexander, Emperor Alexander, and Kaiser Alexander. The tree is characterized by vigorous growth, a spreading crown, and high winter hardiness, with fruiting beginning at a young age.
The fruits are very large, round-conical in shape with a bright red skin, often featuring stripes. The flesh is white, tender, juicy, and aromatic, but firm and somewhat coarse. The variety is mid-season; the fruits are suitable for fresh consumption and culinary processing, though they do not have a long storage life.
