The Jm1 rootstock provides trees with a dwarf growth type and has good compatibility with scions. The root system has relative resistance to excessive soil moisture, and trees grafted onto this rootstock form a spreading type of crown.

The plant has a high capacity for propagation by hardwood cuttings, with a rooting percentage reaching 93 percent. The rootstock is resistant to root rot, Alternaria leaf blotch, scab, and woolly apple aphid, and moderately resistant to fire blight.

Jm1 is not susceptible to apple stem pitting virus, but shows susceptibility to apple chlorotic leaf spot virus. This rootstock is part of the Japanese JM series, which also includes numbers JM2, JM5, JM7, and JM8.
