The variety is a hybrid of the wild apple Malus niedzwetskyana and the variety Antonovka. A characteristic feature is the intense red coloration of the fruit flesh, skin, flowers, and wood.

In the 1960s, the variety was considered for use in ornamental gardening as a street tree. The variety is characterized by high winter hardiness, suitable for a continental climate.

There is a risk of confusion with the apricot variety of the same name, which has fundamentally different fruit characteristics: a pale yellowish color with a carmine blush.
