The variety is classified as an autumn apple and was created as a result of breeding work at the Polli Horticultural Research Centre, part of the Estonian University of Life Sciences. In breeding materials, the variety is also found under the designation Kata 3.

During studies of Estonian varieties, it was noted that under certain climatic conditions, particularly in a hot summer, fruits of the variety Madli can acquire a mealy consistency or a tendency toward core browning.
