The name Pearmain in apple culture was historically assigned to various varieties. The term may originate from a medieval French word related to fruit longevity, or from the Latin pyrus magnus, meaning "large pear," which indicates the conical shape of the apples.

The group includes varieties such as Adams Pearmain, which possesses firm, aromatic flesh and resistance to scab, and Winter Pearmain, known as an old winter variety with a long storage life. There are also varieties such as Claygate Pearmain, which is distinguished by its resistance to diseases in adverse conditions, and Blue Pearmain with large fruits having a bluish bloom.
