The tree has moderate to vigorous growth, forming a wide crown, and fruits mainly on spurs. The variety is a triploid, which limits its use as a pollinator for other apple trees.
The fruits are of medium size, round or slightly conical, often ribbed in shape. The ground color of the skin turns pale golden upon ripening with a red striped blush and characteristic russeting. The flesh is cream-yellow, firm and juicy.
The variety is demanding of nutrient-rich soils and preferably a mild climate with high humidity. It is susceptible to powdery mildew and canker, while sensitivity to scab is assessed as low. The fruits are prone to dropping when ripe.
Ribston Pippin apples are used as dessert fruit in fresh form, and are also suitable for making pastries, sauces, juices and ciders.
