The Zijden Hempje variety, which translates to "silk shirt," is a slow-growing tree. The name of the variety is associated with the presence of a whitish bloom on the skin of the fruits or the delicate texture of the skin.

The fruits belong to the summer or early autumn maturity group. During the ripening process, the color changes from green to almost white with red stripes on the sunny side. The flesh of the fruits is soft, juicy and fine-textured, the taste is aromatic, with possible notes of anise and almond. The storage life of the fruits is short.

In modern gardening, the variety is rare, found primarily in collections of heirloom varieties, and is used as a dessert and exhibition apple.
