The name Zigeunerapfel encompasses several traditional varieties, such as Roter von Simonffi or Roter Herbstkalvill. Due to the lack of a single origin, the characteristics of the trees and fruits depend on the specific biological type.

The fruits are medium-sized, broadly rounded and strongly ribbed, with dark black-red or bright wine-red skin. The flesh is white, often with pink veins, and possesses a sweet-sour taste and a spicy aroma.

The plants are traditionally grown in Central Europe. The crown shape varies from broad to broadly pyramidal. The varieties are used fresh and for culinary purposes; they are demanding regarding soil moisture, as the fruits are prone to dropping on dry sites.
