The apple variety Irene (Malus pumila Mill.) is a spontaneous mutation of the Fuji variety. The tree is characterized by early harvest timing and large fruits. The variety possesses field resistance to powdery mildew and fire blight, as well as the ability to re-bloom within a single season.
Ornamental forms of the apple tree under the name Irene are deciduous trees about 4 meters tall with a dense spherical crown. Leaves have a reddish hue when unfurling. Flowering is accompanied by intensely pink-purple flowers, after which small burgundy fruits with a diameter of up to 3 cm are formed.
The literature also mentions the variety Prinses Irene, which belongs to maturity group B and is self-incompatible, which should not be confused with the forms described above. Furthermore, the name Irene is used to designate plants used as indicators for viral diseases.
