A medium-sized tree, characterized by rapid growth and reaching a height of 5–6 meters in 10 years. The foliage has a dark purple color, changing to orange-red shades by autumn. Flowering occurs in spring, in April-May, with large fragrant flowers of pink or purple-pink color.
Fruits are small, decorative type, not intended for consumption. The plant possesses good winter hardiness, prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils. In trade, it is often identified as the variety Evelyn or the synonym Rubra; it requires caution when selecting due to possible confusion with the hybrid purple crabapple.
