Plants marketed as Mojito mint most often belong to the species Mentha × villosa, which is a hybrid of Mentha spicata and Mentha suaveolens. This species is known as yerba buena and is botanically distinct from peppermint.

In horticulture and trade, the name Mojito is often used as a marketing designation for mint varieties used in the cocktail of the same name. Due to the lack of official registration, confusion often arises, where plants of this type are erroneously attributed to the species Mentha × piperita.
