The variety is native to the El Montsec region in the province of Lleida. Trees of this variety can reach hundreds of years of age. The variety is intended for the production of premium quality olive oil and is often used in blends, for example, with the Arbequina variety.

Oil from this variety possesses a complex taste with hints of bitter almond, sweetness, and fruity notes. Cultivation often takes place on stony and slate soils, which influences the aromatic profile. The variety is classified as susceptible to anthracnose.

It is important to distinguish this Catalan variety Verdiell from the group of Verdial varieties, which are more commonly used as table olives and represent a different variety.
