A distinctive morphological feature of the variety is the presence of reddish (anthocyanin) coloration of the panicle.

The variety is used in comparative scientific studies of millet varietal diversity, in particular when studying compositional characteristics, including methionine content. The crop can be used for food and feed purposes.
