Variety description

10 August 2026

The name MORELLA refers to a group of sour cherry varieties, not sweet cherry. It is a historical group selected through folk breeding over centuries. The trees are usually weak- or medium-growing, often with drooping thin shoots or a shrub-like crown form.

The fruits are of medium or large size, about 5 grams, with a round or slightly oval shape. Upon full maturity, the skin becomes dark red, almost black. The flesh is dark red, very juicy, with a pronounced acidic taste.

Varieties of the group are considered self-fertile, possess high winter hardiness and good disease resistance. Due to high acid content, the fruits are used primarily for culinary processing: making jams, compotes, baked goods, wines and liqueurs, being rarely consumed fresh.
