The name «Ochsenherzkirsche» does not refer to a single standardized breeding variety, but is a group name for a number of landrace sweet cherry varieties. The fruits of these trees have a recognizable shape resembling an ox heart, from which the group's name is derived.

Various local forms are hidden under this common designation, such as «Geismarer Ochsenherz», «Rintelner Ochsenherz» or «Witzenhäuser Ochsenherz». These varieties often lack clear breeding documentation and are preserved in regional collections or private gardens as historical heritage.
