CIGANYMEGGY is not a single breeding variety, but a collection of local populations and clones widespread in Hungary and neighboring countries. Genetically, these forms belong to the sour cherry (Prunus cerasus) and differ in their biological characteristics.

Fruits of this group ripen in late June and are relatively small in size, with a diameter of 16–22 mm. The flesh is characterized by a sour taste, a high anthocyanin content, and an intense dark red color, which is important for the production of juices, concentrates, canned goods, and traditional alcoholic beverages.

Trees of this group are studied in the context of comparing biological characteristics and drought tolerance. The plants have a historical origin resulting from the natural selection of local forms, rather than modern hybridization.
