The rootstock is a hybrid of Prunus cerasus and Prunus fruticosa. Its use makes it possible to limit the growth of grafted trees to 40–50% of the height of plants on vigorous rootstocks, which simplifies maintenance and harvesting.
Trees grafted on this rootstock enter into bearing 2–3 years earlier than usual. Gisela 5 does not produce root suckers and exhibits winter hardiness, however, it is demanding regarding the level of soil fertility and moisture, possessing weak drought tolerance.
The plant is susceptible to bacterial canker and certain fungal pathogens. With high yields, the rootstock requires fruit thinning and regular pruning to maintain their quality and size.
