St. Julien is not a fruit variety but a group of clonal rootstocks for plum, peach, apricot, and nectarine. Historically, this name was applied to a type of plum described in 1754, whereas modern horticulture classifies the rootstocks of this group as the taxon Prunus domestica subsp. insititia.
The rootstock provides trees with semi-dwarfing or medium vigor, accounting for approximately 70–80% of the parameters on seed rootstocks. The plants possess good anchorage, relative resistance to plum pox virus and drought, are suitable for heavy soils, but are prone to root suckering.
The fruits of this rootstock group are of no interest for commercial horticulture, as they are small and have tart or sour flesh. The purpose of St. Julien is to ensure compatibility with scions and to influence the growth characteristics of trees in orchards.
