The variety is a representative of traditional Portuguese selection and is maintained in national gene pool collections, in particular at the INIAV institute. Detailed morphological descriptions of the tree and fruits are absent in open scientific publications.

Within the framework of studies on resistance to fire blight caused by Erwinia amylovora, the Bonita variety is characterized as having a medium to high degree of susceptibility to this disease.
