Bottiglia is not a modern breeding variety with regulated characteristics, but rather a group of ancient local genotypes. The origin of the variety is often associated with France, and the name itself reflects the characteristic bottle shape of the fruits.

Molecular genetic studies show that samples of this group are often triploid. The variety is late-maturing, with harvest ripening occurring at the end of October. At present, the material is used primarily in traditional gardening and is of interest for the conservation of genetic biodiversity.
