Campana is a local variety (landrace) that is not a product of modern breeding but belongs to folk culture and local biodiversity. The variety is included in genetic resource collections for the study and conservation of unique genotypes.

The fruits have a characteristic pear-shaped or bell-like form, which determined the variety name. Historically, these fruits were intended for local consumption, possessed keeping quality, and were suitable both for fresh consumption and for culinary processing.

The name is a descriptive term encountered for various local pear varieties in Spain and Italy. In publications of the Galician research center CIAM, the variety appears as an object of study within genetic collections, while detailed agronomic descriptors for it are not widely available.
