The Citron des Carmes variety (synonym Madeleine) has been known since the 17th century. It is a summer pear ripening in July or August, featuring small fruits with juicy, sweet, melting flesh and a pleasant aroma. The variety is self-sterile and is characterized by poor keeping quality and low transportability.
The name Citron was also used as a synonym for other old varieties: Citron de Septembre was identified with Doyenné Blanc, and Citron d'Hyver was used to designate pears intended for culinary processing.
