Pyrus communis L. European pear · Fruit crops

Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is native to Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna and has the synonyms Farinaccio and Cova. The name Cova originates from the traditional method of storing fruits in grain chaff. The plant's genealogy has not been established; the variety is recognized as an object subject to conservation due to the risk of genetic erosion.

The fruits have a spheroidal shape, flattened at the base, and a short 3–3.5 mm stalk. During the ripening period, a bright red blush appears on the yellow-green background. The fruit flesh is buttery and aromatic; ripening occurs approximately in mid-August.

The trees are characterized as robust and resistant, capable of developing under conditions of low maintenance intensity, which is confirmed by their widespread survival in abandoned orchards.
