The rootstock was obtained within the framework of the University of Bologna breeding program from seedlings of the variety «Volpina». It is propagated exclusively by in vitro micropropagation.
The vigor of the rootstock is assessed as medium; indicators are lower than those of pear seedlings, but higher than those of the quince rootstock BA29. The rootstock shows resistance to chlorosis with excess lime in the soil and drought tolerance.
The use of Fox 16 is aimed at solving problems of graft incompatibility, characteristic of some combinations with quince, and increasing the adaptation of pears to soil conditions.
